Back in October when Koi Japanese opened in Leigh, I praised it for being good for our town to have something a bit different.
Let me tell you, since that initial post, we have become a little addicted to Koi; specifically to the sushi. Barely a week goes by now without us popping in for a sushi platter, some soft shell crab inside out rolls and chicken age gyoza.
Cast your eyes over this- this is a sushi platter which I got as takeaway the other night for less than £12. The sushi chef is based out front, so you can watch him make your dinner in front of your eyes, and everything on there is sparklingly fresh. The eel is my favourite – it really is meaty and for months I thought it was meat rather than fish! The mackerel comes in a close second, and we tend to order extra of one of these!
The soft shell crab rolls (not pictured- always too busy eating ’em) are also becoming a bit of a problem. I think if they ever take them off the menu I would have to go into therapy. Fried crab, wrapped in rice, covered in fish eggs which pop in your mouth. Perfect.
I’m not going to lie – the orange walls and lack of week-day customers means it’s not the same as going to some trendy sushi place in Manchester (where, I admit, I have been left sorely disappointed in the past). But the friendly staff and amazing sushi and sashimi make up for a lack of atmosphere. I’m sure that if they embraced social media (or y’know, got a website) they could spread the word, but sushi is a tough sell in Leigh.
If I were rich, I would eat here everyday- or ask the lovely Japanese sushi chef to move in with us! But until then I will have to do with a weekly fix and the knowledge that we can get the best takeaway for miles around.
