People in Bolton and Wigan are being united by a love of cake – and organisers of a local group are looking for more sweet toothed bakers to join their ranks.
The Clandestine Cake Club was set up in Yorkshire five years ago by Lynn Hill. The concept is simple. A group of people meet up in a secret location; they all bake a cake and share it over a cuppa or two. There’s no competition or pressure; it’s just a chance for enthusiastic home bakers to meet new people and try each other’s cakes. There are now over 200 groups across the world and when the Bolton and Wigan groups were looking for new organisers, two existing members stepped up to the challenge.
Claire Thomas from Wigan and Clare Talbot from Bolton were both regulars at the Bolton group for three years. Explains Claire: “When the current organiser had to step down we didn’t want to see the group finish. It’s such a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon, eating cake and having a chat, and I’ve made some really good friends here. The group is great fun. We have a laugh when we have cake disasters and share tips and recipes when things go well. We get ladies and gents of all ages – some are die-hard regulars who even had a virtual meeting once when the snow got the better of us!”
Clare added: “As Wigan was looking for an organiser as well it made sense to combine the two groups. So now we’re looking for new members to come and join the fun and maybe some new venues who’d like to host a bunch of thirsty bakers.”
The next meeting is on Saturday 18th July in Wigan and the theme is Summer Lovin’. This could be a cake packed of summer ingredients, one which reminds you of your favourite holiday or even, being literal, something to do with the film Grease! The venue is secret, with members only being told a few days before but the organisers have revealed that it is in Wigan this month and will only say that it is ‘very special’.
Keen bakers would like like to join the club this month or in the future should visit www.clandestinecakeclub.co.uk and sign up to the Bolton and Wigan Group. Would be members or venues looking to get involved can also email Claire at info@goodeggfoodie.com
