Manchester’s Hidden Gems

I was asked if I’d like to add a foodie hidden gem to a map of Manchester recently, for hotel visitors staying at Millenium Hotels.

As you can see, there are some crackers on there, including quite a few I have been meaning to go to myself for a while (hello, Portico Library) so it has spurred me on to spread my culinary wings a bit more too.

Manchester Hidden Gemd

My choice of Manchester’s hidden gems was a café. In a library. It might not sound much, but the John Dalton library is a stunning gothic building hidden in plain sight on busy Deansgate. Next time you’re shopping call in and have a look round – it is free to get in and you won’t regret it. Café Ryland’s is on the ground floor in a bright modern extension.

I chose this as my hidden gem because it is affordable, the menu is pretty simple (great for weekend shopping trips when you’re ready to drop) and the ingredients are all locally and / or ethically sourced. So the cheese is from Lancashire, the bread from Chorlton and the meat from farms in nearby Cheshire. And last time I went you could get a hot Vimto which seals the deal as far as I’m concerned!

Let me know if you’ve been to Rylands, or if you’ve another hidden gem not shown on the map which I need to check out!
